The environmental therapy aspects of Innercept have been researched and designed to facilitate health and healing as we ask the residents to do the very hard work of emotional growth, maturation, and life skill development. Many aspects such as the color schemes of the interior of the homes have been designed to tap into the sensory quality sight as they provide a soothing, warm atmosphere. Furnishings in the homes such as fabrics and linens are chosen to provide a soft, tactile experience. Aroma therapy is used to elicit various qualities such as calm and restfulness, as some residents may struggle with sleep. Music is used as a coping skill, and all residents in the adolescent program are given program-owned MP3 players with approved music. Young Adults utilize their personal music device for this purpose. The menu cycle is designed to provide variety, balance and enjoyment, and cooking classes are offered weekly to build that life skill while providing for greater exposure to a variety of recipes, some of which are the recipes the residents enjoyed at home. Cultural events also lend themselves to eating a greater variety of foods in the homes. These aspects and more have helped to lead to the therapeutic benefits seen when taste, smell, hearing, touch and sight are integrated into the programs of Innercept.
